IB vs A-Level in Singapore: Which Is Harder and Which Is Right for Your Child?
The Singapore Education Landscape at Post-Secondary
After O-Level, Singapore students face one of two main academic tracks: the Junior College pathway leading to Singapore A-Levels, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme available at a select group of schools. Both are globally recognised and lead to university admission worldwide โ but they are fundamentally different in structure, philosophy, and demands.
Choosing between them (or understanding which your child is entering) has significant implications for tuition needs, workload management, and university applications.
What Is the IB Diploma Programme?
The IB Diploma is a two-year programme taken by students typically aged 16โ19. Students study six subjects โ three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL) โ spanning languages, sciences, humanities, mathematics, and arts. In addition, students complete:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A philosophy course requiring an exhibition and 1,600-word essay
- Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research paper in a chosen subject
- CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service): A portfolio of extra-curricular experiences
The maximum IB score is 45 points (7 per subject + 3 bonus from TOK/EE). Top universities worldwide accept IB scores, and many offer course credit for high HL scores.
What Is the Singapore A-Level?
The Singapore A-Level, administered by SEAB, is taken after two years of Junior College. Students take:
- H1 subjects (1 unit each, typically 3): including compulsory General Paper (GP) and one H1 science/humanity
- H2 subjects (2 units each, typically 3): the core subjects for university admission
- H3 subjects (optional, highly specialised): for exceptionally strong students
- Project Work (PW): A compulsory group project completed in JC1
The A-Level grade scale runs from A to U, and university admission in Singapore is based on rank points calculated from the best H2/H1 combination.
IB vs A-Level: Key Differences
| Criteria | IB Diploma | Singapore A-Level | |---|---|---| | Assessment Style | Mix of exams + internal assessment | Primarily written exams | | University Recognition | Global (120+ countries) | Strong in Singapore; good globally | | Workload | Very High (breadth + depth) | High (depth-focused) | | Flexibility | Moderate (must take 6 subjects) | Moderate (choose subject combo) | | Cost of Tuition | Higher (specialist IB tutors needed) | Standard tuition rates | | Ideal Student | Self-directed, enjoys writing & research | Exam-focused, strong memory retention |
Which Singapore Schools Offer IB?
IB Diploma is offered at:
- Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) โ ACS(I), a top boys' school
- St Joseph's Institution (SJI) โ an independent boys' school
- Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) โ runs both IB and A-Level
- Various international schools โ Tanglin Trust, Singapore American School, UWC, GESS, etc.
Most Singapore government JCs (VJC, TJC, NJC, CJC, SRJC, etc.) offer the A-Level only.
Tuition Needs: IB vs A-Level
IB students have a strong need for specialist tutors who understand the IB marking rubrics, Internal Assessment (IA) requirements, and the specific demands of HL vs SL papers. IB tuition is more specialised and typically commands higher rates.
A-Level students have access to a wider pool of tutors, with many ex-MOE teachers and full-time tutors specialising in specific H2 subjects.
At TuitionSG, we maintain a database of vetted tutors for both IB and A-Level. Our coordinator will ask for your child's specific subjects and level when matching.
