Understanding the PSLE and Why Preparation Matters
The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is one of Singapore's most consequential academic milestones. Under the Achievement Level (AL) scoring system introduced in 2021, each of the four subjects — English Language, Mathematics, Science, and Mother Tongue — is graded from AL1 (best) to AL8. The sum of all four AL scores determines a student's PSLE aggregate, which directly affects secondary school placement.
The schools most Singapore parents aspire to for their children — including Raffles Girls', Hwa Chong, Victoria, SCGS, Nanyang Girls' — typically require PSLE aggregates of 8 or below. Each individual AL score therefore matters enormously. A student who receives AL3 instead of AL2 in a single subject may lose access to their first-choice school.
