MOE Primary Mathematics Syllabus: What Singapore Parents Need to Know
Singapore's Primary Mathematics Framework
The MOE Primary Mathematics curriculum is built around mathematical problem-solving as the central goal. Unlike pure drill-based approaches, the framework rewards the ability to show reasoning, construct models, and communicate mathematical thinking clearly.
Key Emphases
Mathematical Modelling: Students are expected to use bar models and other representational tools to solve real-world word problems. Paper 2 of PSLE Maths consistently rewards students who draw accurate models.
Problem-Solving Heuristics: Students should know multiple approaches to non-routine problems: working backwards, drawing diagrams, making systematic lists, and using algebra where appropriate.
Number Sense for Paper 1: Since Paper 1 does not allow calculators, students must develop efficient mental calculation strategies. Students who rely entirely on written algorithms are at a disadvantage.
Data Interpretation: Charts, tables, and graphs appear regularly. Students should be able to read, interpret, and draw inferences from various data representations.
How to Prepare
- Prioritise understanding why methods work, not just memorising procedures.
- Practise model drawing consistently from P3 onwards.
- Do full timed past-year PSLE papers from P6 Term 1 to build exam stamina and time management.
