PSLE Scoring System Explained: A Parent's Complete Guide

Back to Blog

Understanding the PSLE AL System

Singapore replaced the PSLE T-score with the Achievement Level (AL) system in 2021. Each of the four PSLE subjects β€” English, Mathematics, Science, and Mother Tongue β€” is graded AL1–AL8. A student's PSLE aggregate is the sum of all four AL scores. The best possible aggregate is 4 (AL1 in every subject).

AL Score Bands

| AL | Score Range | |---|---| | AL1 | 90–100 | | AL2 | 85–89 | | AL3 | 80–84 | | AL4 | 75–79 | | AL5 | 65–74 | | AL6 | 45–64 | | AL7 | 20–44 | | AL8 | Below 20 |

How School Placement Works

Secondary school posting is based on PSLE aggregate, student preference list, and available places. Popular IP schools (Raffles Girls', Hwa Chong) typically require aggregates of 8 or below. Most popular neighbourhood schools fall in the 15–20 range.

Mother Tongue Bonus Points

Students who qualify for the Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL) merit award can receive up to 2 bonus points off their PSLE aggregate β€” potentially shifting school placement options.

Practical Advice

Focus on consistency across all four subjects. An AL5 in one subject cannot be compensated by AL1 in another. For most students, moving from AL5 to AL4 in their weakest subject is the highest-impact improvement target.
